Penn State Orange Bowl 2006 - Pre-Game

This image captures the essence of the Orange Bowl. The anticipation, parties and sight-seeing were over and LET THE GAME BEGIN. Paul Posluszny, Alan Zemaitis and Michael Robinson were probably the best and most respected captains Penn State had for a long, long time. Before the game, I was in the stadium early to set up equipment and I could hear the crowd outside the gate. I went to the location and looked down to see several thousand students chanting We Are……..Penn State! The excitement was building! All three captains are clearly visible, along with the fans seated behind the team area. This is a very popular image.

Before each game most football teams have rituals. Penn State stretches to make sure players don't “skip” the process if left to their own devices.

Also, as a matter of discipline, it gives the coaches opportunities to great the players and encourage them to play their hardest and make the most of the opportunity. Coach Paterno especially enjoys this ritual and makes it a point to talk to many players individually. Dick Anderson personally shakes the hand of every player on the team.

The Lion and Cheerleaders traditionally lead the team out of the Tunnel in Beaver Stadium. At the Orange Bowl, the team was led through a large tunnel that looked like a Quonset Hut (named for Quonset, RI Naval Base during the WWII housing) with smoke pouring out. It was very dramatic and the smoke lingered in the lights through the first quarter. The men traditionally carry the flags that spell out P E N N S T A T E with the women close behind. In all of these images, the total image includes the stands in the background with easily identifiable fans.
