Obrien's Lions - Seniors, 2012

This year's seniors kept a team from total deterioration throughout the year, lead by most valuable team player (just received at awards dinner) Michael Mauti. Michael comes from a great family led by Richard Mauti, a former Penn State player from the '70s and a 7-year veteran of the NFL. Brother Patrick was a wide receiver for the Lions from 2005-2009. Michael has really excelled in two ways, as a player and as a leader of men, along with key teammate and great friend, Michael Zordich. Mauti was named to several all-american teams this year. Congratulations, seniors!

Coach O'Brien

This image, taken just before kickoff at Indiana game, was difficult because of the strong backlight. I cropped it a couple of ways and let the strong light act as a backlight. Black and white (above), which I like (maybe even better) and color below. This is traditionally sized at 8x10, 16x20, 20x24, 24x30, etc.

Mauti and Zordich

When Michael Mauti was injured during the Indiana game (third serious knee injury), his friend and co-leader of the 2012 Penn State Nittany Lions, Michael Zordich was the first on the field to lend support. This is typical of the camaraderie between these two special leaders and the balance of the 2012 seniors and underclassmen. Once again, congratulations on a wonderful season packed with enthusiasm, energy and exciting drama on and off the field.

Matt McGloin, (#11), hands off to Zac Zwinak during the first quarter of the Wisconsin game on November 24, 2012. McGloin, winner of the Burlsworth Trophy presented annually to the best former 'walk on' player in Division I FB. Being a former 'walk on,' I can relate to the pain he went though (mental and physical). McGloin ended his career completing 61% of his passes, a school record (270) passes with (446) attempts and passing yards (3,266). Matt just signed a three-year contract with the Oakland Raiders; he was not drafted. In this image, lineman Ty Howle (60) and Tackle Devon Smith (76) are "cross blocking." Howle goes first and Smith takes a step back and follows off of TY's block, giving both players a better blocking angle and ultimately a touchdown for Zack and the Nittany Lions on their way to a great upset win over Wisconsin. This is a great inside look into play development. I also like the visibility of the fans in the background.

Alma Mater

Coach O'Brien started a tradition this year, having the players sing the Alma Mater after each game serenaded by the Penn State Marching Blue Band. No Alma Mater has been so sweet as this one. I saw people with tears in their eyes.
