Rural Pennsylvania in Winter

Within minutes one can be in Rural Pennsylvania. Take a drive from almost anyplace in the state and you will be in Farm Country within a half-hour.

Pennsylvanians sometimes do not realize the simple beauty of life outside the cities or the suburbs, which abounds in beautiful farmland, country homes and interesting shopping.

My emphasis in this section will be more Central Pennsylvania since I have a home there. This has been an evolution for me to "learn" how to photograph these areas. There will be winter, autumn, spring and summer scenes, but I tend to "lean" towards the beautiful winter landscapes.

Rural Pennsylvania

Red Barn

This barn was photographed after a large snow the morning after. The sun was coming out with some blue sky added as a bonus. The snow was not spoiled or melted and was still on trees and buildings. It is the favorite of almost everyone who has seen it.

Winter Farm Scene

Although I have photographed this farm many times, this image illustrates the entire hillside with the fresh fallen snow and early morning light. Attractive scene and would look beautiful in the right place in the right home. This can easily be printed 40" long and framed out to 48-50" for a spectacular wall hanging.

Cattle Farm

If you are leaving State College for Philadelphia, you might have noticed the Tate Farm on the right, which sells Christmas trees, Basset Hounds and has a unique General Store. Across the street (to the left looking out the driver window) is a cattle farm, which mimics the scenery from the old cowboy movies, especially when the property is filled with grazing cattle. This is the scene the day after a State College snow with a bonus of blue skies and gorgeous clouds. This would look good in your home. Can easily be printed 40 inches long and framed out to 48 inches.

Cut Corn Stalks

The cut corn is accentuated by the recent snow and provides "leading lines" for this dramatic rural setting in Pleasant Gap, PA. Note all the trailers used for gathering corn.

Hilltop Farm

This farm is quite beautiful for what it is. It is basically a corn farm and is owned by another local resident. The man growing the corn works hard has a family and a beautiful view of the Valley. Not bad. He also provides a unique and beautiful setting for all to enjoy.

Laurel Creek Reservoir

The Laurel Creek Reservoir has to be passed on the way to State College. It is the body of water on your right before you go up the steep mountain about 25 miles from town. This reservoir is under maintenance right now testing soil, physical underwater exam of spillway, etc, but still supplying water to Lewistown and the surrounding area. However, it happens to make a beautiful scene with part of the "seven mountains" grouping in the background. This is a MAINE view in Pennsylvania.

Amish Barn

In Belleville, PA beyond the entrance to PEACHYS, I decided to drive down the road before heading back to the Philadelphia area. About two miles into my journey, there was a beautiful farm on the left. It was well maintained, clean, with a large farmhouse. The overcast day, wet untrampled snow fog and texture on barn wood added to the ambiance and helped "capture" two horses entering the barn for more feed. It was a beautiful sight.

Zion Farm Complex

Near my home in Zion, Pa, that many people experience as part of the scenery. I appreciate the scenery and enjoy creating photographs of these beautiful landscapes. This was the morning after a storm with scattered snow from time to time. I almost did not go check it out. You can see the farmhouse on the left where these hardworking people live, farm and raise their families - not bad. Sometimes I can hear them talking in the summer as plain as if I was standing next to them from two miles away (has to do with the atmosphere).

The Farmhouse

This house embodies all the farmhouses across America and afar, I think. It, of course is a symbol of "Americana", but also plays the same role throughout the world. In this house there is a family that works a farm, raises children (who usually also work the farm) and keep everything afloat with 16-hour days, to our benefit. These are great people!
