The Colors of Autumn

Within minutes one can be in Rural Pennsylvania. Take a drive from almost anyplace in the state and you will be in Farm Country within a half-hour.

Pennsylvanians sometimes do not realize the simple beauty of life outside the cities or the suburbs, which abounds in beautiful farmland, country homes and interesting shopping.

Pleasant Gap

Route 64 runs from Pleasant Gap to Lock Haven, PA and beyond; it is laced with beautiful farms and an unlimited source of scenery. The only trouble is the speed limit is 55mph and the average vehicle speed in many parts is over 70mph, and is loaded with local trucks speeding to and fro to keep on schedule. I have to be very careful, because I love the scenery and watching it change throughout the year. In this scene, we have green grass, corn that has turned brown and the fall foliage behind the farm.

Autumn Train

Heading south from Harrisburg on Rt. 322 there is an exit near Rockville, PA in Dauphin County. Spanning the Susquehanna between Rockville on the East and Saint Mary's on the West is the Stone Bridge, 112 years old and still usable for trains heading to Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. They also have to travel the Horseshoe Curve in Altoona (a sight to see in itself). They made this bridge to stay on the "backs of Irish workers" who toiled for years until its completion around 1898. This train was headed towards Philadelphia with a backdrop of beautiful Fall Foliage. Except for the engine and train cars this could be a scene from 100 years ago.

Autumn of Old

Childhood play in Central Pennsylvania. I remember as a child growing up in during WWII going out of the house and playing until dinner. My father was in the Navy and was stationed in Quonset Point, RI. near the bay. and I was probably lucky I didn't drown. I taught myself how to swim (with jelly fish) in saltwater and "roamed" the Naval Base at will. This scene, in a small way, reminds me of those carefree childhood days.

Horse Farm in Fall

On Oct 9, 2013, I photographed this beautiful driveway in Zion, which leads to a private residence with a horse farm, where children and adults learn riding and train for competition. The repetitive trees, the length of the driveway and the fall foliage all add up to a colorful rural scene in central Pennsylvania.

Autumn Extension

In late November, there is still plenty of beauty left in the Autumn sky. This was mid to late November 2013 on an 'off road' from Rt 64 N towards Lock Haven, PA. The light blue sky and the soft clouds accentuated the low light illumniating the barn just before twilight. Adding to all of this is the brown remains of the cut corn, the long shadows and the cattle outside the barn doors. Beautiful image for the right home.

Thursday Wash Day

November 2012 I was headed to Lamar, PA, which is south of Lock Haven, PA. It was a Thursday, so I was surprised to see the wash out (which is usually Monday). It was a beautiful vantage point and the cold atmosphere, frost and wash made a gorgeous late Autumn scene.
